Fluff Digital

For this Starter for 10 we're interviewing the founder of Fluff Digital - Scott Gulliver

1. In your own words - what do you do?

We help companies to design, build, and launch effective digital products and experiences. We combine software design, development, and strategy to provide our clients with innovative thinking and knowhow.

With an emphasis on digital product exploration & development, we aim to get more companies thinking creatively about their approach to technology. And what's more, we believe in building our relationships with a super friendly and approachable attitude.

2. What's the most exciting thing about what you're doing?

With our experience in building software solutions, we get really excited about helping a wide range of companies to create engaging experiences for their customers.
When applying some fresh thinking into some discreet and overlooked industry, there’s really nothing that beats those “ah-ha” moments that you get with an innovative mindset.
There is so much opportunity out there, along with some really unique companies, and we always look forward to helping them realise the potential with digital solutions.

3. What are you most proud of so far?

We recently partnered with The Platform Project in Swindon to help facilitate a half-term project where young people worked to start up a real youth-led digital marketing agency.
We were able to bring our real-world knowledge and experience to ensure that the agency would be set up to be successful.
It was a real honour to work with such enterprising young people, and we’ll be working closely with the team as they continue to grow the organisation.

4. What have you found most difficult about being a start-up?

One thing that we weren’t quite prepared for was just how many different hats you have to wear when starting a company with just the two of you.
It’s been a real experience having to learn the ropes of everything from sales and marketing, through to finance.
Along with managing this side of the business, it can often be difficult to balance your limited time across everything.
Thankfully, there are loads of great resources out there to help get your head around some of these important aspects of a successful business.

5. What would you do differently if you started now?

When you’re starting a new company, it can be a daunting experience, and it also feels like a very personal thing. When we were still in an early concept stage, we kept things pretty close to our chest.
Since launching more publicly, we've had nothing but great support, and I think it would be beneficial to get this as early in the process as possible. The advice I'd give is to get out there and start having those early conversations even before anything is set in stone, and let it help shape your project.

6. Where do you think you'll be in 12 months?

Growth is our main goal at the moment, as we move into a place where we can continue to help more companies.
With that growth, however, our focus is on maintaining our personal approach and being able to build strong relationships around deeply understanding and working with our clients.

7. What tools/people/services/organisations helped you most?

As we work fully remotely, we've been leveraging digital tools since day one to help us collaborate effectively from opposite sides of town.
From video calls using Google Meet, to design software such as Figma that natively supports multiple users, having tools and systems that "just work" has been key to letting us focus on the important stuff.

8. What's the best thing about being based in Swindon?

In a word, community. Swindon is such a friendly place where help and advice is so freely given, especially between start-ups and smaller businesses.
It's also becoming a real hub of innovation to rival some of the other tech scenes in the country. Having the support of some big companies here is also a bonus.

9. What support does the tech scene need in Swindon?

Networking opportunities are vital for a community, and we're starting to see an increase already in networking around the town. I think that the more this can be facilitated, the better.
There's so much opportunity within the local area alone, and it's vital that we continue to build a strong culture of community within Swindon's tech scene.

10. Where can we find out more about you?

Our website is the best place to find out some more about us, at https://fluffdigital.com. We're also at all the usual social places too, such as LinkedIn and Facebook.
